It’s been a while since there was a comedy funny enough to bring on full belly laughs. Maybe it’s because the last year has been spent living through a pandemic and an increasingly stressful political climate, but there is something so genuinely ridiculous and silly about Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar that one can’t help but laugh at the farcical nature of it all. The film — directed by Josh Greenbaum, with a screenplay by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo — is audaciously bold in a way that befits its untempered zaniness. From a bizarre villain to unexpected musical numbers, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is egregiously bad, but with splashes of occasional humor.

Barb (Mumolo) and Star (Wiig) are two middle-aged women who have been best friends for years and pretty much do everything together. Attached at the hip, the pair even have the same job as sales associates at Jennifer Convertibles and spend their work hours chattering away about anything and everything. They’re even a part of the Talking Club (not to be confused with Book Club) and spend even more hours gabbing away with friends about selected topics. However, when the company goes out of business, Barb and Star decide to try something different, face their fear of change, and head to Vista Del Mar for a relaxing vacation that sends them on the wildest, most unexpected adventure of their lives.

The early hours of their vacation aren’t exactly what they’d hoped it would be, but that quickly changes when they meet Edgar (Jamie Dornan), the assistant to the film’s villain (yes, there is a villain for some reason and she is also played by Wiig). Edgar is sent to Vista Del Mar to execute the final stage in the nefarious plot, but he’s too frustrated by the lack of affection from the antagonist to focus. Unrequited love, friendship, hotel staff breaking out into song, and botched espionage are all at the core of this comedy, which often feels like an awkward and over-long dream sequence than an actual film.

Similar to Barb and Star, who are confident in who they are and their obvious eccentricities, the film follows in its characters’ footsteps, boldly accepting of its random moments, its chaotic plot, and some of its off-kilter dialogue. The production design includes a lot of overly bright pastel colors and hilariously tacky set pieces. Barb and Star’s fashion sense and hairstyles are reflective of the 1980s, though the film is obviously set in the present day (cell phones are always a giveaway). The film is certainly free-spirited, unencumbered by nothing. It also makes use of its setting so well that it makes one want to go on a vacation all of a sudden — a terrible feeling considering the ongoing pandemic.
